History of Brooklyn, NY
Brooklyn, New York's western tip, is a place with a rich and distinguished history that dates back to the 17th Century. Lenapes had lived in the area in the past, but in 1636, the Dutch established Breukelen, a settlement on the banks the East River. Brooklyn, which is now New York City, was a predominantly rural and agricultural area in the early days of European colonization. There were fields and orchards that supplied food for the growing population of New Amsterdam (later renamed New York City).

The population density of Brooklyn was 37,339.9 inhabitants per square mile (14,417.0/km2) in 2022, making it the second-most-densely-populated county in the United States, behind Manhattan, and it had the ninth-highest population of any county nationwide. Were Brooklyn still an independent city, it would be the fourth most populous in the U.S. after the rest of New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
